For the purpose of this example, we need an example toner cartridge. A popular, common cartridge is the cartridge used for the HP LaserJet 4350 printer. My Tech Guru currently sells the compatible high capacity cartridge for $137.00 per cartridge. The commission rate on this cartridge is 12% for the first 60 days, and 6% for orders placed when the customer first order date is older than 60 days. So, within the first two months the commission is $16.44 on each cartridge, and after 60 days the commission is $8.22 on each cartridge. We provide the double commission rate for the first 60 days to compensate you for your customer acquisition efforts. The standard rate of commission is paid to you on re-orders as compensation for your customer retention efforts. While both types of commission are important, the retention commission becomes the key to your long-term earning potential.

For the purpose of this example, we will say that you are only successful in selling one HP LaserJet 4350 high yield compatible cartridge per day, for 20 days per month. Additionally, these new customers will only use one toner cartridge per month. While a customer’s actual usage will vary, most medium sized businesses have multiple laser printers and use multiple cartridges per month. For now, however, assume that you only sell one per day and the customer uses only one per month.
