Throughout most of the 1980's and 1990's I worked in corporate America hiring, training, and managing sales people. Thousands of them! I worked in some of the largest cities in America; New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Dallas. Despite the fact that I had a prestigious, high-profile career I always felt that I was one step from the unemployment line because I worked for somebody else. I know that probably sounds silly to some people but most of you know what I'm talking about. There is no security when you work for someone else.
In 1999 I started studying computer technology so that I could start my own business. By 2001 I was a Microsoft Certified Professional, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, and a Cisco Certified Network Associate. Thinking I was ready to test the water I launched my first tech business in 2001, WITHOUT QUITTING MY DAY JOB. I knew that I could do it but I wasn't quite ready to cut the ties (and the paychecks). I was going to tip toe my way into my own business. Well, we all know the horrible events that unfolded on September 11, 2001. By November of 2001 I found myself without a job, and was then scrambling to figure out how to make my computer business make money. We used up the savings and were basically living on credit cards because I couldn't find enough work repairing computers, networks and operating systems. The only sales jobs I could find were straight commission and NOBODY was hiring an over-paid, middle-aged, former corporate executive.
In the spring of 2002 I was talking to one of my customers, that was giving me a little work every now and then, when the fellow asked me if I worked on printers. I immediately said "yes." The truth is that the only printer I ever worked on was my own home office printer, and not much more than changing the toner. I started telling customers and prospects that I worked on printers and I soon had more work than I could handle. I figured out how to get my hands on a few service manuals and free technical support, and was soon putting money in the bank again.
More importantly, I discovered that all my fancy Microsoft and Cisco certifications were meaningless. Even though offices were laying off technical staff, not buying new computers, and "making do" with their old software, if the business was going to stay alive their printers had to keep spitting out documents at an incredible rate. The printers had to work! If they didn't, the business immediately called for service and paid higher rates to repair that printer than I made as a Systems Engineer! I almost couldn't believe it. After five years I can honestly tell you that a business cannot survive without printers and they will do nearly anything to make sure they continue to produce high-quality documents in amazing quantities. Nobody asked me for credentials (like certifications) and gladly paid me handsomely.
